Personal Development

Years ago, I attended an intensive course for a networker mentor program, that may be a great topic to share with everyone.  During the training, we were asked to answer a daily prepared list of questions, and my mentor was asked to listen…really listen… to my answers.

We focused on personal growth, development issues,  specifics of business building, and network marketing leadership.  Our daily questions list, was designed to reveal what stops people from reaching success.

Here is some of what I learned.  Human beings have all kinds of opinions about themselves.  What they can, and cannot succeed at.  But, where did those opinions come from?  What are they based on?  Perhaps, these controlling thoughts we ALL HAVE, lies in the decisions we made as a child, about what we perceived at that time, as succeeding, or failing.  What we “thought” worked or did not work.

Here is your homework.  You can discover your fundamental thought process by a simple process.  Yes, really, it is very simple….ask yourself one question.  Just one question will give you your answer.  READY?

“No matter what I do, it’s never _______________________”  (fill in the ending.)

I promise you;  that thought process will only take you in two directions.  Quantity, or Quality.  You will respond with either  not enough, or not good enough.

The lesson to learn here, is that this is just an opinion, a decision that is simply NOT TRUE.  You made it up!  At the time you probably felt you had the proof needed to make that decision..to believe that it was real.  But it’s not.  It’s made up.  So, are you now asking yourself, “Have I let this thought process, that was made up, in my mind as a child…direct and manage my life now, as if it is truth?  In total honesty, I DID!

What is important from this is:  What do you choose to think?   Remember, it is all made up.  So, ask yourself.. “how am I as a leader,  am I the kind of person who inspires others?   Do I lead myself and others to greatness?  Am I successful?  Do I make a difference?”   The best one, to change your life is:  “What is great about me?”

Now, before you answer, remember it is all made up….so if you find yourself answering in a negative way, just know that YOU made it up.  So, YOU can choose a different, better, positive response instead.  Now, just keep thinking about your new self-empowering mind, and soon it will be true for you.

While you are at it….if we are making it all up anyway…make it BIG, GLORIOUS, FUN, and AMAZING!

To your success…
Judy

    Great post Judy!

Realizing thoughts are made up was one of my biggest AHAs in my life. We are meaning making machines where 100 people can experience the same event and create 100 different meanings based on how they filtered the information.

There really should be a book called Don’t Think and Grow Rich because most people listen to negative thoughts without realizing it’s all made up.

We are the author of our own book, director of our own movie, composer of our own symphony that we call life. We might as well make it a masterpiece.

    Thanks for the important message.

Our self talk can be so destructive if we let it run rampant. Being aware of our thoughts and creating positive thoughts works miracles. We have the choice to decide the way our life will look.

Hi Robin and Judy, great to meet you from the TSA! I answered your question in my mind and it was No Matter What I do, it’s Never going to Stop me Being Successful.

It doesn’t quite make sense… but it does to me.

I’ve trained my mind to think positive thoughts and affirmations so I’m always looking to reframe negative things…

I always write positive affirmations and cleansed my mind of negative I can’t do type affirmations a few years ago.

Thanks again and great to meet you!

I really like your post. We really are making all these thoughts up in our heads and it really is based on experiences as a kid. What we thought was true then is not when we’re adults. It’s like craning your adult feet into those favorite shoes you had as a kid – doesn’t work. Better to just get a new pair that fits perfectly.

    Hi Judy,

Allowing yourself to think of what can be as if it already is can be quite powerful, especially if you are thinking positive things. If you want to be a leader, how can you know what to do if you’ve not yet done it ~ so think it through and ask yourself those questions about what a leader would do, or say or act & then go out and do these things as if it is already a reality. I really liked how you explained how to do this ~ great exercise to go through! :-)

You really do see the big picture here. Good for you! Picture what can be, and it will be. Your example is excellent…if you want to be a leader, figure out what a leader would do, and be it! The rest will figure itself out. :) Thanks for your thoughts Christine…we truly appreciate it.

A very simple process and a very simple concept. Our realities are made up by what we think of them. But those thought habits are sometimes so hard to undo. Thanks for sharing this and reminding me in an ever so gentle way that I really do not exist. LOL!

Hi Judy and Robin – It’s really amazing to discover that lots of us are still operating with the “rules” we learned as a kid – I once saw an ad for a marketing class that had the title “Is a 6-Year-Old Running Your Business?” It’s true though – all that stuff we learned as a kid really gets embedded – it becomes second-nature and as adults we don’t even realize that it’s still there because it’s been a part of us for so long. Getting used to the idea that we can simply change it by making it up takes some getting used to – but once we “get it” – WHOOOOOO!!!!! Thanks for sharing such a simple test to help us determine where we are now! Once we have a starting point – the rest follows :)

Isn’t it amazing, how much we carry what we learned early in our childhood? The more I look into it, the more fascinating it is, to see just how much we are what we were. You are right, it is a great starting point, and the rest will indeed follow! Thanks for you comment Lori, and we are on our way to check out your website!

As they say, what you think is what you are. To become somebody else we have to think differently. We are always right: If we think we can’t make it, we are right. On the other hand if we think we can make it, we are still right. So funny. Great post Judy, Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. It seems, on the surface, to be such an easy thought process…we are what we think. But probably for many, all of the hidden “self talk” takes its toll. You are so right..if we think we can, or we think we can’t, either way…we are right! So let’s all focus on thinking we can! LOL

Great post, reminded me of the quote ‘Perfection is the lowest standard of achievement and doing is the highest’. When we are trying to be ‘whatever enough’, we have knowingly or unknowingly set ourselves a standard of perfection, that we will always fail to meet. Letting go and realizing that it’s all simply in the realm of play and making it up, allows us to express what we have to and are capable of expressing so much more elegantly and joyfully.
    Thanks for the post,

What wonderful thoughts you had on our topic of “Just make it up”! Your quote: “Perfection is the lowest standard of achievement and doing is the highest” is SO TRUE! That does set us up for failure, and that is why so many of us, do fail, in our eyes only. Doesn’t mean we failed, but we THINK we do! Thanks for your thoughts, I truly appreciate them.

I see I’m a little late chiming in on this one! (I was looking through the posts on your sidebar.)

I had no problem filling in that blank with something negative! The cool thing when filling it in with something positive is, I don’t just have to make it up. All I have to do is listen to positive things others are saying to and about me now. Believing those things instead of what was playing in my head for so long, is definitely making a difference!

      Hi again Willena…
We love that you are enjoying some of our other posts. We feel the same way…if we can simply listen to the positive, you don’t have to make it up. But if we occasionally have some “negative feedback” creeping in, we are quick to switch over to a positive notion. Maybe that is called making it up, but it sure feels better, when it is in the positive realm, doesn’t it? Again, we enjoyed your thoughts.
